Production Notes for OpenStage Theatre's 2010-2011 Season
OTHELLO SIDES
BRILLIANT TRACES by Cindy Lou Johnson
Directed by Brooke McQueen

The Story: A blizzard rages outside a remote cabin in the wilds of Alaska. Inside, a lonely figure, Henry Harry, lies sleeping under a heap of blankets. Suddenly, he is awakened by the insistent knocking of a distraught young woman who has fled her impending marriage, and who bursts into the cabin dressed in full bridal regalia. Exhausted, she throws herself on Henry's mercy. Thus, isolated in the confines of the snowbound cabin, they alternately repel and attract each other, exploring the pain of the past and, in time, considering the possibilities of the present. This very isolation proves to be the catalyst that allows them to break through the web of old griefs and bitter feelings that overwhelm them and to reach out for the solace and sanctuary that only hard-won understanding, self-awareness and compassion for the plight of others can bestow.

"Brilliant Traces is kooky, weird and … illuminating about how we live today." - BackStage

The Cast: 1 man, 1 woman

The Characters and character age ranges:

  • Henry Harry (late 20's-30s) A loner in every possible sense of the word. His pain runs very deep.
  • Rosannah DeLuce (20's-30's) Spends all of her time running away, mostly from herself.

Director's personal note: Both characters are in hiding and yet the depth of their emotional potential is staggering.

SHERLOCK HOLMES : THE FINAL ADVENTURE by Steven Dietz
Based on the original 1899 play by Wm Gillette & Arthur Conan Doyle
Directed by Judith Allen

Story: 19th century England. The King of Bohemia is being blackmailed over a notorious photograph on the eve of his wedding by his ex-lover, the famous opera singer Irene Adler. Sherlock Holmes and his trusted companion Dr. Watson are on the case and in the deadly sights of the infamous Professor Moriarty for what may well be the final showdown for Holmes. Winner of the 2007 Edgar Award for Best Mystery Play. A spirited and fast-moving adaptation full of danger, intrigue, humor and surprise.

"An expert homage to all things Holmesian" - Phoenix New Times

"You don't have to be a scholar of detective stories to enjoy…" BackStage

The Cast: 6 men, 2 women

The Characters and character age ranges:

  • Sherlock Holmes: (40's-60) Brilliant, famous detective, older, possibly care-worn or just bored until his fascination with opera singer Irene Adler leads him into an intriguing case destined to satisfy his obsession or complete his demise. (NOTE: this role is precast)
  • Dr. Watson: (40's-60) Holmes' loyal and (sometimes) astute sidekick. The narrator of the story.
  • King of Bohemia: (30's) Royal playboy now faced with dynastic responsibilities and political sensitivities, such as the incriminating photograph with former lover Irene Adler. It is two weeks before his arranged marriage to a proper royal princess and he is being blackmailed over said photograph. Spoiled, desperate, and a silly romantic. FYI: Bohemia is in Central Europe, now the Czech Republic.
  • Irene Adler: (late 20's-40) Charismatic opera singer. Famous, beautiful and quite possibly the female intellectual equal to Holmes.
  • James Larrabee: (late 20's-40) Supposed husband of Irene Adler, but is he who he says he is? Swindler, scam artist, slick and possibly quite deadly.
  • Madge Larrabee: (late 20's-45) James' sister is cut from the same cloth as her brother with the scruples of a black widow spider.
  • Sid Prince: (20's-40) A hitman and petty criminal. Moriarty's right hand man. Uncouth and menacing. Has a score to settle with Holmes and will not be deterred.
  • Professor Moriarty: (40's-60) Holmes' greatest nemesis. Criminal mastermind and overseer of much of murky London's criminal side. Educated and brilliant in a "mad scientist" sort of way. His trademark is he never leaves a trace of his involvement in the crime.

With cast doubling as additional policemen, post boy, clergy, general populace, etc

THE COMPLETE WORKS OF WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE (ABRIDGED) also known as The Complete Wrks of Wm Shkspr (abr) by The Reduced Shakespeare Co.
Directed by Brenna Freestone

The Story: Funny & self-explanatory ("Brevity is the soul of wit." - The Bard)

OR

The Story: A fun look at the entire Shakespearean oeuvre, as performed by three people in two hours. Fast-paced and hilarious!

OR YET AGAIN

The Story: A parody of all of William Shakespeare's plays performed Cliff Notes version by 3 actors. Improvisation is a very important part of the show and it is not unlikely for deviations of the script to happen due to the spontaneous conversations between actor and audience and the inclusion of local and national pop culture. Every performance is truly a different show. Notable for holding the record for the shortest performance of Hamlet. First performed at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 1987 and later played in London for seven years to packed houses.

The Cast: 3 (supposed to be men, but whatever. Ladies, bring your game!)

The Characters and character age ranges:
  • Jess: the "smart" one
  • Daniel: the "wild card"
  • Adam: the "slow" one

There really is no difference between the 3 actors. They are, by turns, witty, demented, politically questionable, intellectually challenged, silly, risque, absurd and brilliant. Oh, and they run around and around…a lot!

Director's notes: The character names will be replaced with the actors given name upon casting. All three actors perform numerous roles within the Shakespearean oeuvre. This is going to be fast-paced, weird and fun. A PHD in Shakesperean stuff is mandatory and must be presented, in triplicate, at the door in order to be admitted to the audition. Only actors fitting into the age range "crib to crypt" need apply. The production will require cross-dressing. Think Mad TV, Mr. Show, SNL, and Kids in the Hall, etc for inspiration.

A PICASSO by Jeffrey Hatcher
Directed by Emelie Borello

The Story: Paris, 1941. Pablo Picasso has been summoned by German occupation forces for interrogation. Enter Miss Fischer, a beautiful "cultural attaché" from Berlin. Her assignment is to discover which of three Picasso paintings recently "confiscated" by the Nazis from their Jewish owners are real. The ministry of propaganda has planned an exhibit to include the Picassos. At first, Pablo agrees, confirming that the three pictures are indeed his own. When Fischer reveals that the "exhibition" is actually a burning of "degenerate art," Picasso becomes desperate to save his work and embarks on a retelling of the story of each painting in an effort to save at least two of his precious "children" while sacrificing a third to the flames. A cat-and-mouse drama about art and politics, sex and truth, with a climatic twist you may not see coming.

"Artful, remarkable and genuinely dramatic, with impressive sensitivity and wit…" NY Daily News

The Cast: 1 man, 1 woman

The Characters and character age ranges:
  • Pablo Picasso (age 59): Of Spanish descent, Picasso is a lover of women and in love with his art. He is very intelligent with a sharp wit.
  • Miss Fischer (age 30-45): An attractive German woman, shrewd and intelligent. Comes across all business but hides a passionate heart underneath.
